College Of Nursing To Expand Research Facilities
Michigan State University's College of Nursing has been awarded nearly $7.5 million in federal stimulus money to expand its research facilities and capacity in a new building.
The funding, from the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Research Resources, will enable the relocation of the college's Nursing Research Center and faculty into the Bott Building for Nursing Education and Research. MSU is expected to break ground this summer on the Bott Building, adjacent to the Life Sciences building.
The $17.6 million building effort also has secured $10.15 million in other support, including a $7 million commitment from the Timothy and Bernadette Marquez Foundation.
"Two of the three floors in the new building will be dedicated to nursing research," Dean Mary Mundt said. "The new space will create an environment conducive to growth in our research teams and efficiencies in our grant management process.
"It will also enable new opportunities for collaboration and mentorship and, better integration of the research mission of the college with the education and clinical practice missions."
East Lansing Police Gearing Up For Saturday’s Final Four Game
The ELPD is staffing up with extra personnel to help with this weekend's Final Four celebration.
Michigan State fans are not the only ones preparing for Saturday's game in which the Spartans will go head-to-head with Butler in the Final Four."All hands will be on deck," East Lansing police Sgt. Carl Nowak said. "Everyone will be working one way or another.
"We'll have extra people on and the way we look at is, 99 percent of the students here at MSU -- they know how to celebrate. We're just here to keep the 1 percent under control."
Cedar Fest is still fresh in many MSU fans' minds. What started as a campaign on Facebook to revive a mass party turned into what police deemed a riot after more than 3,000 people stormed the streets in the area of the Cedar Village apartment complex in April 2008.
The original Cedar Fest, a regular occurrence in the ’70s and ’80s, was a party held on the third Saturday of each October and May. It escalated into a semiannual riot as the years passed before being banned in 1987.
MSU Invite Fans To Send Off Spartans
Michigan State fans have been invited to wish the Spartans basketball team well as they head for the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis.
The team bus is scheduled to depart from the Breslin Center about 3 p.m. Wednesday. Fans are encouraged to gather along the route from Harrison Avenue, north to Michigan Avenue to the state Capitol, then south on Capitol Avenue to Interstate 496.
Michigan State isn't selling tickets to the public for the Final four games at Lucas Oil Stadium, but tickets are available through online sellers. The university's allotment of 3,640 tickets will be used for team members, school officials in the travel party, donors and sponsors.
Izzo Refutes Rumors Of Oregon Offer
Izzo debunks rumors of Oregon offer.
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo refuted rumors Tuesday of any impending deal for Oregon to hire him as coach.“I have no response, I’ve learned that it really doesn’t pay to respond,” Izzo said during at pre-Final Four news conference. “This will not be a distraction. My only focus is winning a third crystal ball.”
Oregon fired Coach Ernie Kent two weeks ago after the Ducks finished 16-16. Kent was Oregon’s all-time leader in victories after 13 seasons coaching his alma mater. Izzo’s name became prominent in news reports about their coaching search on Monday, just after Izzo led the Spartans into his sixth Final Four.
Izzo, who grew up in Iron Mountain, Mich., earns more than $3 million a year from Michigan State and his contract runs through 2016.
Izzo also said starting point guard Kalin Lucas was resting comfortably after undergoing surgery Tuesday morning to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon. He said Lucas hopes to join the team in Indianapolis for the Final Four.
